Uzbekistan’s place as the world’s second largest exporter of cotton comes at a great cost to its children. Each fall the government closes the schools and the children are sent out into the fields to harvest the cotton. NWCRI is a member of a coalition led by As You Sow that is addressing this situation by

calling upon the Government of Uzbekistan to acknowledge this problem, and to work with the International Labor Organization (ILO)
asking companies not to use cotton from Uzbekistan. Companies that have responded: Gap, Levi Strauss, Target, Walt Disney and Wal-Mart.

Take Action: Read White Gold: The True Cost of Cotton. Call upon companies to develop a labeling system that guarantees neither child nor forced labor is used in the production of cotton.
