Alaska Affordable Housing Information

  • In Alaska, Fair Market Rent for a two-bedroom unit is $905

  • An extremely low income household (earning 30% of the AMI of $72,141) can afford monthly rent of no more than $541

  • A 3-person household receiving the maximum TANF grant can afford monthly rent of no more than $277

  • A minimum wage earner, earning $14,872 annually, can afford monthly rent of no more than $372

  • Fair market rent for a one-bedroom unit is $721

  • A household on SSI can afford monthly rent of no more than $174

  • A unit is considered affordable if it costs no more than 30% of the renter's income

  • 45% of renters in Alaska are unable to afford Fair Market Rent for a two-bedroom unit

  • In Alaska, a worker earning the State Minimum Wage ($7.15 per hour) has to work 97 hours per week in order to afford a two-bedroom unit at the area's Fair Market rent

  • The Housing Wage in Alaska is $17.40. This is the amount a worker would have to earn per hour in order to be able to work 40 hours per week and afford a two-bedroom unit at the area's Fair Market rent. This is 243% of the present State Minimum wage ($7.15 per hour)

Alaska Homelessness Info
The following information is from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation's Homeless Service Provider Survey, January 26, 2000.

  • People with disabilities constitute 39% of Alaska's homeless, as compared to 25% of all Americans.
  • People with mental illness constitute between 23-39% of Alaska's homeless, as compared with 7% of the U.S. population.
  • Veterans represent 17% Alaska's homeless, while they only represent 11% of Alaska's population.
  • 29% of homeless clients served reported being victims of violence or sexual assault.
  • 28% of Alaska's homeless are families with children.
