Northwest Coalition for Responsible Investment
Energy and Environment
Global Warming
We educate companies about the environmental and the economic threats posed by greenhouse gas emissions from their products and operations, and seek to increase shareholder value by urging corporations to proactively address global warming.
Global Warming constitutes over 11% of ICCR’s total work with corporations.
Through dialogue and shareholder resolutions NWCRI and ICCR shareholders are challenging Chevron and ExxonMobil, companies that are directly responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, to measure, monitor and reduce their total greenhouse gas emissions.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Resolution
Water and Food
We encourage corporations to take responsible action to limit water pollution and adopt sustainable water practices; and we work to address the environmental and health risks of genetically modified organisms, and the use of patents which restrict the freedom and self-reliance of farmers.
“Water is essential for life, and water scarcity is fast becoming one of the world’s most pressing global challenges.” — Coca-Cola 2004 Environmental Report
In a world where 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, the Coca-Cola Company is a major user of water globally.. It is reported that it takes almost 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of product. Farmers in India say Coca-Cola has been using too much water, and leaving them without enough to grow their crops. A shareholder resolution requesting Coca-Cola to commission a study of the environmental and public health impacts of its operations in India was supported by 7% of the company’s shareholders.
NWCRI and shareholders withdrew a resolution requesting that PepsiCo adopt a policy to identify and label all food products manufactured or sold by the company that may contain genetically engineered (GE) ingredients. The proposal was withdrawn when the company agreed to address the following points in its upcoming corporate responsibility report:
- Disclose its policy regarding GE ingredients
- Discuss its position on commodities containing GE ingredients that may be introduced in the future
- Define its position on pharma crops, commodities grown for non-food use
In 2007 shareholder resolutions were also filed with Dow AgroSciences DuPont, General Mills, McDonald’s, Safeway, and Wendy’s.
